Wuyuan: An ancient Huizhou-style village among rapeseed flowers

Wuyuan is hailed as "China's most beautiful countryside." Over three days and two nights, from the rapeseed flower terraces of Jiangling to the autumn drying in Huangling, spring is captured in the Huizhou-style ancient village with white walls and black tiles.

March is the highlight of Wuyuan. The ten-thousand-acre terraced fields along the river are covered with golden rapeseed flowers, and villages with white walls and black tiles are scattered throughout. Before the morning mist lifts, the entire valley looks as if it has been boiled by spring water. This is the "Chinese countryside" that appears on countless postcards.

Walking into Likeng and Xiaoqi, the small bridges and flowing water and homes are real. In the stone-paved alleys, the horse-head walls of century-old houses rise high, and the stream flows past the doors. Find a teahouse by the water, listen to the rain tapping the green tiles, and time will slow down.

The "autumn sun-drying" in Huangling is a unique sight in Huizhou. Villagers spread chili peppers, corn, and rice on round bamboo plaques and hang them under the eaves of steep slopes, red and yellow intertwined, as if overturning the color palette of the mountain village. Huangling in autumn is livelier than in spring.

If you prefer quiet, go to Sixiyan Village. This well-preserved Huizhou merchant village features exquisite wood, brick, and stone carvings—three carvings. At dusk, smoke rises from the stove, and elderly people bask in the sun on their doorstep—a rare and authentic moment amid the wave of urbanization.

Wuyuan's beauty is in making homesickness tangible. When you stand on the edge of a rapeseed field and watch the eaves lift a corner of the blue sky, you suddenly realize that what we call "hometown" is probably just like this.
