Suzhou gardens are poems written by literati on the earth. In three days and two nights, from the spaciousness of the Humble Administrator's Garden to the exquisite Lingering Garden, through winding corridors and leaky windows and a pool of spring water, one understands the Chinese ambition to "recreate the world within arm's reach."
The Humble Administrator's Garden is the pinnacle of Jiangnan gardens. Centered on the water, pavilions and towers are built along the water; lotus flowers bloom in front of the distant fragrance hall, and the pagoda of the northern temple is borrowed from the walls—a textbook example of 'borrowed scenery' techniques. Strolling through it, every step is a composition.
Lingering Garden is renowned for its "measured control of release." From the narrow entrance to the open central pool, the spatial rhythm is well-balanced. Guanyun Peak is the soul of Lingering Garden; this Taihu stone is "thin, wrinkled, and see-through," reflecting Emperor Huizong's aesthetic obsession of the Song dynasty.
If you're with kids or still at heart, visit Lion Grove. This garden, famous for its lake rockery and rockery, has rocky peaks crouching like a pride of lions, and maze-like caves that make it endlessly enjoyable. During Qianlong's six tours to Jiangnan, countless inscriptions were inscribed here.
At night, I head to Pingjiang Road. This water alley, as old as the old city, features bluestone pavements, small bridges, the sound of Pingtan music, and the fragrance of osmanthus all present together. Find a riverside teahouse to listen to a piece of Pingtan, and the soft words of Wu dialects flow like water to your ears.
The wonder of Suzhou gardens lies in using a single heaven and earth to contain the entire universe. When you peek through the leaky window at a corner of bamboo and rock, you will understand that "heaven and earth in a pot" is not mysterious, but the smallest dwelling for Chinese spirit.
