Morocco Sahara: Starry Sky on the Sea of Sand

The Sahara is the largest desert on Earth. Five days and four nights, between the dunes of Merzuka and the Berber camp, encounter a sea of sand and the purest starry sky.

Arrive at Merzuka, switch to camels, and walk into the sea of sand. The caravan moves slowly between the orange and red dunes, its shadow stretched long by the sunset—the most iconic silhouette of the Sahara.

Spend the night at the Berber tent camp, with campfires, drumbeats, and mint tea. After lights out, the starry sky stretches across the galaxy, and the chances of shooting stars streaking across are astonishingly high—this is a night you can never see in the city.

At dawn, climbing the highest sand dunes to wait for sunrise, the grain of the sand changes from purple to gold in the light, and the wind smoothing out the footprints. Walking barefoot on the sand, the coolness reaches the soles and then warms the tops—a unique touch of the desert.

Back in the oasis, the date palm and groundwater are miracles of life. Berbers brew a pot of mint tea, boiling it three times and offering three toasts—the most solemn hospitality in the desert.

The emptiness of the Sahara reduces the world to sand and stars. When you lie on the dunes, surrounded only by the wind, you will understand: extreme solitude can also be a kind of abundance.
