Petra is Jordan's ancient city of roses and one of the Seven Wonders of the New World. Four days and three nights, explore the lost Kingdom of Nabataea between snake paths and rock walls.
Passing through the Siq, a narrow gorge just wide enough for a few people to walk side by side, with towering cliffs and dappled light and shadow. At the end, a sudden turn reveals the rose-colored façade of the Kazni Temple, leaving you speechless.
Continuing inward, the open-air theater and royal tombs line the cliffs, with the entire city carved into sandstone. The twilight dyes the rock walls a honey-colored hue, marking Petra's most enchanting moments.
If you have the stamina, climb up to Monastery; at the end of over 800 steps is a facade even grander than Kazni. Looking back from the height, the canyon and distant mountains take in all the views, but the leg soreness is worth it.
On the night of candlelight (open on legal days), thousands of candles light along the winding path, Bedouin musicians play and sing, and the temple is solemn and mysterious in the firelight.
Petra's wonder is a joint masterpiece of humanity and rock. When you touch the lintel carved two thousand years ago, you will understand: some civilizations have built their homes in the hearts of stone.
