The best autumn foliage season usually starts in late November, with Kiyomizu-dera, Arashiyama, and Tofuku-ji being Kyoto's three major autumn foliage spots. This 7-day itinerary combines temple pilgrimage, machiya café, and authentic kaiseki cuisine,
Let you measure the autumn atmosphere of the ancient capital with your footsteps.

Kyoto's autumn is a journey of cultivation of color and tranquility. At six in the morning, the stage at Kiyomizu-dera is still shrouded in mist, and the distant Higashiyama is dyed by maples and ginkgo leaves, forming a gradient painting. At this time, Kyoto has not yet awakened; dew on the stone-paved paths reflects the faint glow of lanterns, as if time has been deliberately slowed down.

I recommend saving Arashiyama for the afternoon. The Katsura River by Togetsukyo Bridge shimmers, and the forests on the opposite bank look like overturned palettes. When tired, slip into a century-old machiya converted café, order a serving of chestnut brown with roasted tea, and watch the swaying bamboo shadows outside the window—this is the most luxurious leisure time in autumn.

If you want to find a splash of red outside the crowds, Xiyu Stream at Dongfu Temple is the best choice. At dawn, when the temple gates first open, the entire courtyard is surrounded by maple leaves, and almost no one is on the bridge. The red leaves here are extremely rich: vermilion, orange-yellow, ochre-brown, and evergreen moss intertwine, each step like stepping on a palette.

Kyoto's autumn is also inseparable from the taste buds. For dinner, I booked a kaiseki restaurant near Gion, where the first payment, the next tsuke, and grilled items were served in order. The aroma of matsutake dobin-steamed mushrooms perfectly complemented the night maples outside the window. After the meal, take a stroll along Hanami Koji, and if you're lucky, you might even catch geisha heading to a tea house.

Seven days isn't long, but it's enough to make you understand: autumn in Kyoto isn't on the list of sights, but in the moment woven together by morning light, falling leaves, and a bowl of hot soup. Pack a light bag and wake up early, and the ancient capital will present its best colors to you.
