The Great Wall is not a wall, but a history written on the ridge. Five days and four nights from Shanhaiguan to Jiayuguan, among bricks, beacon towers, and the fortress city, you can understand the backbone that stretches across the mountains and rivers.
The first stop starts at Shanhaiguan, known as the "Number One Pass Under Heaven." The old dragon's head probes into the Bohai Sea, where the Great Wall and the sea shake hands. Standing atop Chenghai Tower and watching the city wall cross the Yanshan Mountains to the west, one truly understands the weight of the word "ten thousand miles."
Badaling and Mutianyu near Beijing are the two best-preserved ends. Mutianyu is sparse and offers vast scenery; the watchtower rises and falls along the mountainside, and in autumn, the yellow treetrees turn red, making them especially magnificent. At dawn, before the mist clears, climbing the city walls, the warmth of the garrison soldiers seems embedded in the cracks between the bricks.
Continuing west to Yanmen Pass and Shahukou, this is the true boundary between farming and nomadism. The wind passes through the pass, carrying the roughness of the frontier. Standing on the pass wall and looking west, the endless Loess Plateau stretches endlessly.
The final destination is Jiayuguan, known as the "Most Mighty Pass Under Heaven." It hangs alone on the Gobi, with the city tower glowing with a yellowish earthy light under the setting sun. Climbing the city wall, the Qilian snow peaks face the Black Mountain; once the gates close, it becomes a natural barrier between the Central Plains and the Western Regions.
The Great Wall gives people a sense of awe, bent by time yet standing tall. When you walk alone along a stretch of wild Great Wall, with loose bricks and rocks and wild grass overgrowing, you suddenly understand: true greatness has never been the wall, but the people who have stood behind it for thousands of years.
