Shefchaouin is Morocco's softest blue dreamscape. The entire old city is painted in varying shades of blue, the streets and alleys filled with the scent of mint tea, and cats sunbathed in front of doors.
Starting from Fez and crossing the Rif Mountains, you arrive at this blue mountain town. The old town of Chefchaouen is built on a hillside, with houses, steps, door frames, and even flowerpots painted blue, said to repel mosquitoes and evoke the idea of the sky and sea.
Early morning is the best time to explore the old town. Tourists have not yet arrived; only locals walk through the streets carrying bread and mint. Colorful woven carpets hang on the blue walls, pots of geraniums are placed at the entrance, and each door seems to have a story hidden behind it.
At noon, find a rooftop café to sit down and order a Moroccan mint tea. The sweet aroma of tea mixed with the coolness of mint, paired with a freshly baked croissant or almond biscuit, and watch the sunlight make the blue walls shine even brighter.
At dusk, climb the hillside outside the Spanish Mosque and overlook the entire old town. The sunset dyes the blue houses in golden and blue, while the distant Rif Mountains are bathed in pink twilight. The sound of prayers rises from the valley, as if time has flown back centuries.
Shefchaouen is not for rushing. It's perfect for getting lost, for taking turns in blue alleys, for making eye contact with a cat on the corner, for buying a handmade carpet and chatting with the shop owner for half an hour. Here, slowing down is itself a way to travel.
