Southeast Asian islands are hot and humid year-round, and the itinerary usually revolves around diving, island hopping, and sunsets. The week before departure is the golden window to pack your luggage. It's recommended to print your itinerary, buy insurance, and keep your passport, visa, and tickets separately.
Documents and visas
Passports must be valid for more than 6 months. Countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival for Chinese passports, but policies change frequently. Be sure to check the embassy's official website before departure. It is recommended to prepare two 2-inch white ID photos as a backup.
Diving and water equipment
It is recommended to bring your own mask, snorkel, and waterproof bag, as they are both hygienic and fitting. If you plan to obtain a diving certificate, completing theoretical courses in advance in China can save time studying on the island. Jellyfish covers provide sun protection and prevent coral cuts.
Sun protection and health
Tropical UV rays are strong, so it's recommended to bring SPF50+ waterproof sunscreen and post-sun repair aloe gel. Seasickness medicine, stomach medicine, mosquito repellent, and band-aids make up the island medicine kit. For drinking water, try to choose bottled water and avoid eating raw seafood.
Cash and payment
Most Southeast Asian islands still mainly accept cash; it is recommended to exchange US dollars or local currency for small change domestically. Some regions accept Alipay/WeChat, but island hopping tickets, tips, and street stalls usually only accept cash. A credit card is sufficient as a backup.
Itinerary booking
During peak season (December to February), hotels and popular island hopping tickets are in short supply, so it's recommended to book 2 to 4 weeks in advance. Save a screenshot of your confirmation in your phone photo album and send a copy to your email to avoid losing your booking if your internet connection is off
